«Entre un 75 y un 80% de los jugadores de la NBA consumen marihuana», afirmó sin tapujos Williams, quien tras su primer año en el certamen norteamericano sufrió un accidente con su moto que truncó su sueño de triunfar en la liga de baloncesto más importante del mundo.
«Es fácil para los médicos recetar otros medicamentos, y yo he sido adicto a alguno de ellos durante cinco años de mi vida. Pero cuando hablas de marihuana la reacción es: ‘¡¡Aahhh!! Es un medicamento prohibido», señaló el ex jugador que a la vuelta de su lesión también disputó cinco partidos con los Nets cuando estos aún tenían su estadio en Nueva Jersey.
El armador que brillara en su paso por el básquet universitario de EEUU con los Duke Blue Devils, y que ahora es un reputado analista de la cadena ESPN, agregó: «Conozco muchos atletas que juegan con Percocet. ¿Alguna vez has tomado Percocet? Te deja mucho más grogy que usar aceite de cannabis».
Con una postura a favor de legalizar la marihuana, Williams aseguró que «es algo que está demonizado en la sociedad. ‘Oh, mira, es un fumeta’, ésa es la reacción de la gente. Pero yo actualmente utilizo aceite de cannabis porque me ayuda con la inflamación de mis rodillas y me calma la ansiedad».
Sin embargo, el ex basquetbolista no es el primero de sus colegas que habla de manera abierta sobre el consumo de marihuana. Blake Griffin, ala-pivot de Los Angeles Clippers, también se ha manifestado a favor de su utilización con fines medicinales, algo que el ex base de los Bulls pide que se legalice por parte de las grandes ligas de los Estados Unidos.
«No estoy diciendo que cualquier menor de 18 años tenga que utilizar marihuana, pero desde un punto de vista médico es hora de que grandes marcas como la NBA ó la NFL tomen una postura más progresista y empiecen a mirar hacia adelante en lugar de estar anclados al pasado», añadió Williams durante su entrevista con Fox.
El ex deportista de 34 años nacido en Nueva Jersey también suele dejar numerosos titulares cada vez que recuerda su etapa como jugador en la National Basketball Association (NBA). Uno de estos casos se produjo en septiembre de 2015, cuando fue otro de los que reveló en qué gastan su dinero las estrellas del torneo.
«Nos jugábamos 20.000 dólares a piedra, papel o tijera varias veces al día. Y podíamos perder hasta 100 de los grandes en una jornada», concluyó Williams.
